The primary goal of the Sewerage Master Plan is to reduce significantly, and, in the long-term, to eliminate the pollution arising from unhygienic disposal of wastewater, of all industrial, commercial and domestic origin, up to the planning horizon (2035).
Dhaka WASA has already taken an initiative to meet the requirement by implementing its Sewerage
Master Plan prepared in 2014 in order to bring the whole city area under planned sanitation system. According to the Master Plan, Dhaka Metropolitan Development Plan (DMDP) area (1528 km2) has been divided into 12 sanitation catchments. However, the core city area has been divided into 5 sanitation catchments. These are (i) Pagla, (ii) Dasherkandi, (iii) Rayerbazar, (iv) Uttara and (v) Mirpur.
Bangladesh is committed to improving the water and sanitation scenario of its urban settlements (7th FYP). This commitment is further reinforced through UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 6) for 2030. Accordingly, the guiding principles of the Water Supply Master Plan were formed.
